Mise-en-Scène Elements
stranger things
Stranger Things 4 | Volume 1 Final Trailer | Netflix - YouTube
what decade is the show set in?
in the 1980s
what genre is the show?
thriller / mystery
how do the mise-en-scène elements tell you this?
- the setting. the way most people are behaving and the things they are doing like roller skating or the way they listen to music does show that they are in an older time than today.
- the costumes. the bright colours and the type of outfit the people in this scene in particular are wearing is stereotypical to the 1980s, also connoting the the idea of having a fun time with what they are doing in the moment.
- the blocking. the way that these characters have crowded themselves around the camera in order to show how secretive they are trying
- the proxemics. clearly the characters in these shots have a relatively close friendship with each other considering how close they are within this club, but again also something secretive based on how close their huddle is, the hand on the shoulder also showing the comfort in this clearly stressful moment for them.
the two characters in these scenes also show their own proxemics connoting their own intimacy based on their very close contact, the arms linking and how between this link their hands would be touching as well, showing that over time these characters have grown closer with each other in order to create their own love in the end.
- the prosthetics. the producers of this series made a 6 hour full body prosthetic for the actor jamie campbell bower in order to make it feel a lot more realistic when the other actors were in his presence, also without having to use a lot of cgi to make the scenes of him walking about. the lighting also used in these scenes, over vecna's face and in the background connote a feeling of fear as it makes his character look a lot more ominous in the dark room he is already in.

bridgerton
Bridgerton | Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube
what decade is the show set in?
in the early 1800s
what genre is the show?
romance / historical drama
how do the mise-en-scène elements tell you this?
- the setting. london a couple hundred years ago specifically in an area where the wealthy families live...
..but also shows the other side to it where it is clear that less wealthy / poor people live.
- the costumes. the producers did really well coming up with the outfits as this is set during the rise of the regency era when this fashion was becoming the main kind of one for the wealthier families who could afford to have it made. including this idea of during the idea the women were also basically forced to have quite small waists by wearing corsets, so showing this with the actual costume design makes it seem a lot more believable that it may be a true story, even though we as viewers are aware that it is not, relating to the idea of the diegetic effect, making it clear. and, disregarding the context behind it, both the accent being correct for this time (and the area they are in (london)) and the way that the speech has been put across by the actors also clearly shows the era they are portraying.
the way this show works is the seasons base around the love story of a specific character from the 'bridgerton' family, the ups and down they may go through, and for example this one is the first season which is based on the eldest daughter and the duke of hastings. they go through the type of love where it starts off as fake, in order for daphne to get more attention from the wealthy men in the city, and for simon to have less attention from all of the status-desperate women so they both can get what they want in a way. though from this fake relationship they both end up falling in love.
- the blocking / proxemics. as mentioned previously, these two characters started with a fake relationship in order to fulfil their own wants. the images on the top and bottom left show how much they have progressed in this relationship. the top shows to be more serious and clearly putting on a front to ensure there is no suspicions to the people around them, waling / holding arms in a fixed position. whereas the bottom shows a much more relaxed relationship as they show to have grown more fond for each other over time.
